The importance of frequent dental treatment

In the past, horses were fed a coarser diet, which caused their molars to wear down more. Nowadays, horses are fed a much more balanced diet, which usually consists of soft food. This is good for the horse in terms of nutrition, but not for the adequate wear of the incisors and molars. Horse teeth grow 2.5 to 3.5 mm per year and wear down a maximum of 2 mm per year, causing hooks and sharp edges to form on the molars. If this is not checked and corrected in time, more problems arise, such as wave formation, which prevents the horse from chewing properly, with all the consequences that entails. In short: dental care for horses is very important for the general health of the horse.
